Evade, Skip, Startle, Listen, Remember, Amen… is a dance that responds to the imagery, rhythm, and syntax of two poems by Siddarth Gupta. Created as part of the International Writing Program x Dance evening at the University of Iowa, this dance was devised as a system of layered games that the dancers play, selecting new roles for each performance. The games are arranged to create a formal composition, but unlike a choreography that is pre-”set,” this mode of working requires the dancers to develop an agility of attention—ready to respond to the changing conditions of the dance.
